RE – LINK the old and new spaces.
SPACES : A space should evoke memories, therefore, the fortress is a space creating dynamic emotions among the users.
“Architecture is thoughtful making of Space” Louis Kahn
(Mendelsohn, Matisse and Kahn, et.al, 1957, p.2-3)
JUXTAPOSITION OF SHAPE & MATERIALS :
Fortress has a strong monumental personality : old elements are restored and confronted with modern volumes. The juxtaposition of shape & materials between old & new is necessary to create a dramatic experience for its users, hence evoking their sense of interest. This juxtaposition symbolizes calm & chaos, civilization & wilderness, darkness & lightness, fact & fiction, silence & sound etc.
VOIDS : Conscious surrender to loss (void) can be emotionally liberating. Nothing is really “gone”. Energy cannot be destroyed, only converted. Hence, this design aims its users to experience this energy by contemplating inside the “void”.
FLUIDITY : The new architectural spaces has been designed on the concept of fluidity, symbolizing a person’s undisturbed flow of thoughts and emotions. The fluid landscape design blends with the fluid geometrical architecture building form design, juxtaposed by the existing architecture and landscape of the historic fort.
NATURE : “Sky,rock and abysses : this is Capo d’Orso”. Therefore, the design represents the 4 elements of nature : WATER, AIR, EARTH & FIRE.
The Mediterranean sea has been cross-roads of empires over centuries, therefore locating fortress at a strategic position. Hence, the waves from the sea acts a riddle for the geometric form in the design. It complements to the fluidity of the design.
Air – represents thought
Water – represents emotion, birth, fertility & cleansing.
Earth – represents physicality
Fire – represents spirit
OLD Spaces & voids : the old aesthetics are maintained and re-used effectively. The fort wall has been extended and re-used for re-link purposes. The barracks, bastions, vaulted archways, niches are reused adaptively.
NEW Spaces & voids : the new aesthetics are linked as a labyrinth(maze), spatially & visually linking the site as a whole. The FLUID landscape congregates the site as whole.
Museum designed as a labyrinth of tunnels and trenches as is the fort. Abstracted from the concept of a tunnel, the museum is designed as a part of a double curvature torus. It has been designed as a sanctum of solace (autonomous).
Memorial “BOWL OF REMEMBRANCE”
healing bowl; balance of life & death; energy and essence; symbolizes elements of nature -earth/sky/fire/water
Just as water moves to fill a void inside the bowl, so too will new energy move to fill yours.
Hotel : re-use of barracks as hotel suites & dormitory+ new volumes as BUNKERS for military experience.
